The forklift bucket is a solid bulk loader. The handling of bulk materials requires lifting equipment used as containers, such as the bucket and its adaptations: sifter, mixer.

The different types of a forklift bucket

In agriculture, on building sites or even in bulk storage, it is necessary to use the forklift truck as a loader. For this purpose, different buckets are adaptable.

While any forklift can be converted into a loader using a bucket, this is especially preferred for rough-terrain forklifts that work on the unstabilised ground (construction sites, forests, fields).

The bucket has become the essential accessory for moving any material and loading bulk trucks (earth, sand, gravel, waste, etc.).

Depending on the use of the bucket, several types of buckets are available:

– the tilting bucket,

– the mixing bucket,

– the screening bucket.

The tilting bucket

The forklift bucket resembles the bucket of an excavator and is attached to the fork attachment of the forklift. The bucket can be tilted hydraulically, often up to 60°, to deliver the load easily. With a width of about 1 m to 2.5 m, the available volume varies from 0.3 to 2.5 m3.

The mixing bucket

Forklift Components

The mixing bucket is a bucket in which a horizontal auger works to mix concrete.

– The drill is hydraulically driven and allows the concrete to be crushed during transport to prevent it from setting.

– By raising the arm of the truck, the concrete can be delivered to the desired location and height, even in hard-to-reach places.

– A hydraulically controlled discharge hatch from the cab ensures a precise concrete flow.

– The volumes offered range from approximately 200 to 800 litres.

The screening bucket

– Currently not widely used on telescopic forklifts, the screening bucket from mechanical shovels is gradually being adapted to the telescopic forklift due to the high demand.

– These hydraulically operated buckets, either rotary or grid buckets, separate the elements in a sieve.

Helpful in screening pebbles, gravel, soil or debris of any kind, they allow you to work quickly with a telescopic handler in hard-to-reach areas.

The forklift battery

Forklift Components

The forklift battery: a choice that is sometimes overlooked.

Every motorised forklift truck has at least one battery. Essential for starting an internal combustion engine, the battery is the only energy source for an electric forklift.

The battery of the industrial truck

The forklift truck battery is an essential element, the autonomy of the electric forklift truck. It depends on it and the starting of the thermal forklift truck.

Forklift battery: batteries, information and advice

The batteries used on forklift trucks are mainly of two distinct types depending on the motorisation.

The types of forklift battery according to their motorisation

Starting batteries are used to operate the starter motor of a combustion engine:

– gas forklift truck,

– diesel forklift trucks.

Traction batteries are needed to provide power to the electric motor:

– electric pallet truck,

– platform pallet truck,

– electric stacker,

– order picker,

– electric forklift trucks.

Starter batteries

These batteries must deliver a high current to activate the starter, but for a short time.

The batteries used are open lead (Pb) batteries because they are the most capable of high currents at short discharge. The average life of an open lead battery is about 3 to 4 years.

They are recharged as soon as the engine is running by its alternator. The discharge of a lead-acid battery should never fall below 20% of its total capacity.

One or two starter batteries are usually installed on a forklift truck.

The choice of a starter battery will be based mainly on:

– the total capacity in Amperes/hour, which indicates how much energy the battery can store,

The power in Amperes indicates the amount of instantaneous current the battery can deliver in an instant.

Traction batteries

These batteries must deliver a low or medium current to power the electric motor during long handling sessions.

Several traction batteries are usually combined on an electric truck. It is not uncommon to find 4 to 12 batteries of 12V, 24V or 48V. The batteries used are lead calcium (Pb-Ca) with low current but extended discharge.

They will have to be regularly recharged with a specific charger, often integrated with the truck, on the 220V mains current.

The discharge of a lead-calcium battery should never fall below 30% of its total capacity.

Batteries should be recharged in one go and should be fully charged to avoid a memory effect that would reduce its capacity.

The choice of a traction battery should be made by strictly replacing the battery with a new one having the same characteristics.

The average life of a lead-calcium battery is about 5 to 6 years.
