The starter switch is an essential component of the vehicle’s starting system. It acts as a switch within the circuit. In other words, it gives the necessary impulse to the car’s mechanics to make it wake up. Although this part does not require any particular care or even maintenance, a simple breakdown has a direct consequence; the immobilisation of the vehicle until it is repaired.

The starter unit, also known as the starter switch, is composed of 2 main parts:

the solenoid;

and the electric motor powered by the coals.

When the driver puts the keys in the vehicle’s ignition, he activates an electromechanical relay. This allows current to flow through the system and provides the jolt the car needs to start. The action of these 2 elements causes the car’s mechanics to awaken. Here are some explanations to better understand the process.

The solenoid is the primary cause. Like a coil, it is a wire wound around itself. Once it is supplied with electricity (via the electric motor), it activates a pinion, which in turn causes the engine flywheel to rotate. The vehicle then starts.

Starter switches allow a system to generate a lot of power. Used repeatedly to power heavy industrial engines, they function as electromechanical relays. Each starter unit consists of a “fixed armature” and a “moving armature” part. When the circuit is de-energised, the moving part is moved away by a spring mechanism. As soon as the current flows, like a magnet, the fixed armature attracts the second one. The circuit closes, the electric current can flow, and extraordinary energy is released, allowing the rest of the system to switch on.

Starter switch faults and changes

If the vehicle struggles or refuses to start, the starter switch may be the cause. But before you have your car towed to a garage, check that the battery is not simply faulty! To do this, check the lights on the dashboard come on when you turn the key in the ignition. The starter switch does not require any care or regular inspection. However, it can sometimes break due to wear. If this is the case, listen carefully. Do you hear a clattering sound? This means that the flywheel is turning, but the energy needed for the system to turn no longer be supplied. It is probably the carbon brushes that need to be changed. This is the most common failure. If this is not the case, there may be a more severe problem causing the silence of your motor. Consult a professional immediately.

Good to know: the starting system is a complex tangle of parts. When the system seems to fail, there is usually only one culprit. If you go to a garage, be sure to specify that you want (if possible) only the faulty part of the system to be replaced. This will save you a lot of money.

Symptoms of an impending starter switch failure may be a dull clicking sound before starting the engine or a slow start. If these warning signs are observed, contact a car mechanic. Failure of the starting system will result in the vehicle being immobilised.
